Private James William Collins served in Palestine with the 2nd Battalion and then transferred to the1st Battalion for service in India on the North West Frontier. In September 1939 they were stationed in Razmak and moved to Agra in December 1940. In February 1941 the battalion moved to Malaya and subsequently became part of the 15th Indian Infantry Brigade. After sustaining heavy casualties they were amalgamated with the remnants of the 2nd Surrey’s to form the British Battalion in the retreat to Singapore. The survivors were killed or captured after the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, Private Collins being killed on the 17th February. He is commemorated by name on the Singapore Memorial at Kranji War Cemetery.
