5832541 Private James Frederick Cook died on 4 August 1943 and is buried in Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand. The 5th Battalion formed part of the 54th Infantry Brigade who fought in Malaya and were captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Many of these prisoners of war died of ill treatment and disease during the building of the infamous railway of death and are buried in various large cemeteries along the railway track. There are 1,329 British soldiers buried in the Chungkai Cemetery alone.
