D/SSX 32568 Charles Thomas Clapp, Ordinary Seaman, H.M.S. Valentine, died on 16 May 1940. He has no known grave and is commemorated by name on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. During the retreat to Dunkirk and the evacuation of Holland, H.M.S. Valentine was engaged in the protection of the Scheldt ferries when, on 15 May 1940, she was attacked by dive bombers and grounded in the Schelde River and abandoned. Seaman Clapp was wounded in the bombing attack and put ashore to hospital. However, he was killed on the following day when the hospital was bombed by enemy aircraft.
