M.C. London Gazette 24 June 1916: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in leading, replacing and reorganising Lewis guns during an action on the crater lip. He went from crater to crater and did invaluable work.’

William Ian Edwards was born in 1897 and educated at New College, Herne Bay, and afterwards at St Johns College, Hurstpierpoint. He obtained his commission in December 1914, proceeding to the front with the 11th Battalion in September 1915. He won the Military Cross in may 1916, whilst machine gun officer, at the capture of Crosbie Craters, near Souchez, on the Vimy Ridge. He was gazetted Captain in October 1916, and Adjutant in March 1917, remaining on active service until 5 August 1917, when he was killed in action by a shell. He is commemorated by name on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
