M.M. London Gazette 9 December 1916. Private Whittaker was awarded his M.M. for the attack on ‘Railway Wood’, 3 miles East of Ypres, on 30 September 1916, as part of a raiding party on the enemy lines. His M.M. was presented by the Corps Commander at a parade at Elverdinghe Chateau shortly after the raid. He was killed in action during the attack on ‘Infantry Hill’ at Monchy, East of Arras, on 30 May 1917, and is commemorated by name on the Arras Memorial.
