D.S.M. London Gazette 11 November 1919 ‘The following awards have been approved for services in the Caspian sea.’

Signalman Edward William Cozens served aboard ASIA during 1918-19 with the Caspian Naval Force commanded by Commodore D. Norris, Royal Navy. The ASIA was one of the merchant ships plying on the Caspian that were seized and converted into men-of-war temporarily. They flew the Russian Naval Ensign and it was not until March 1919 that the White Ensign was hoisted for the first time. A full account of these operations in the Caspian Sea will be found in ‘Britain’s Sea Soldiers 1914-1919’ by H. E. Blumberg (extracts sold with the lot).
