D.S.M. London Gazette 1 October 1917 ‘The following awards have been approved to men of the Royal Navy Air Service for services on patrol duties and submarine searching in home waters.’

Stanley Jefferies was born in Weston Super Mare, Somerset, on 30 August 1898, and entered the Royal Navy Air Service as a Boy Mechanic on 15 June 1915. He commenced his adult service on 30 August 1916 having earlier been advanced to Air Mechanic Wireless Telegraphist 2nd Grade on 3 August 1916. He was subsequently advanced to Air Mechanic 1st Grade on 1 September 1917, and to Leading Air Mechanic Wireless Telegraphist on 1 November 1917. His D.S.M. is understood to have been awarded for good service as an Air Mechanic Wireless Telegraphist on anti-submarine searching flights during 1917 aboard ‘Coastal’ North Sea type Airships based on the east coast of England. He transferred to Royal Air Forceon 1 April 1918 with rank of Corporal.
