D.S.M. London Gazette 11 August 1917 ‘The following awards have been approved’: Trimmer John Dryburgh Phillips, R.N.R.

Recommendations of Officers and Men of the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and Royal Indian Marine, serving in Mesopotamia, for recognition of good services performed. The report which follows was signed by Vice Admiral Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, Commander in Chief East Indies Station (ADM 1 8493/162):

‘I am of the opinion that the crews of motor lighters are deserving of recognition. In view of the fact that most of these men are now being relieved of their arduous services by natives and their craft being turned over to the military it is considered that now is a suitable time to make awards etc. It is pointed out that men in motor lighters had a very arduous time during the Summer of 1916 in the course of which 10 died and 48 were invalided. Of the 4 men recommended 2 are R.F.R. and 2 R.N.R.’
