D.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1917 ‘The following awards have been approved in recognition of services by Petty Officers and Men in submarines in enemy waters during the period from the
commencement of hostilities to 3 August 1916.’

Throughout the duration of World War I Edward Haydon served in submarines and during the period August 1914 to October 1915 whilst aboard the Depot Ship MAIDSTONE he served with the Eighth Oversea Submarine Flotilla (‘D’ & ‘E’ Class boats) based at Harwich, under the direct Command of Commodore (Submarines) Roger Keyes. During service in ‘E’ Boats Haydon was present in various actions in the Heligoland Bight and later the Baltic.
