During the Great War, ships of the Royal Navy undergoing repair or refit in the Royal Dockyards were, at time of emergency such as the threat of the German Fleet putting to sea, ordered to sea at short notice, and in order that the repairs might be completed at the earliest opportunity, a number of dockyard workers such as Riggers, Shipwrights and Fitters volunteered to sail with the ship to complete vital repair work on passage. Details of the award of the British War Medal for ‘Service with the Royal Navy’ appear in the O.M.R.S. Journal Volume 24, p102. Whilst the British War Medal (approximately 2000 issued) is occasionally accompanied by the Victory Medal, named in the same manner, it is rare to find the 1914-15 Star so named.
