When pensioned ashore from the Royal Navy, Harry Hobbs elected to join the Coast Guard Service on 7 September 1911. He was appointed 2nd Mate of the THRUSH on 11 July 1912, Tender to PRESIDENT and part of the Coast Guard Permanent Cruiser Service. Although referred to as cruisers these vessels were in reality quite small and used to provide sea training for Coast Guard personnel and occasionally worked with the Revenue Cutters of HM’s Customs & Excise. On 15 May 1914 he was appointed to ARGUS, a vessel of 380 tons, armed with two 6 pdr guns whose name was changed in 1917 to ARGON. He served aboard this vessel until 1919 when he next joined JARVIS where he served until retired in 1921 after 10 years service. During the 1914-18 War apprximately 28 Chief Officers, Senior Mates and Second Mates served in the Coast Guard Permanent Cruiser Service.
