David Silver Allan was born in Montrose, Scotland, and was one of the men who joined DISCOVERY from Scott’s old ship H.M.S. MAJESTIC. During the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04, he took part in a number of sledging journeys and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer on the Expedition’s return. His photograph appears, along with several mentions, in Edward Wilson’s narrative of the Expedition. His Polar medal was presented to him on board H.M.S. VERNON on 30 December 1905. During the Great War he served on board the following ships and shore stations: VICTORIOUS, EXCELLENT, CRESCENT, VICTORY I and PRESIDENT II. From October 1917 until the end of March 1918 he was attached to the Royal Air Force.
