Gunnery Instructor and Seaman Gunner.
Samuel Lone was born in Mendham, Suffolk on 6 December 1836, and entered the service as an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 15 February 1826 aged 19 years. He next joined MAJESTIC as an Ordinary Seaman (July 1856) and CUMBERLAND (May 1857) being rated Able Seaman on 13 February 1859. He was rated Seaman Gunner aboard EXCELLENT (August 1859) and in this rate he next joined WRANGLER (April 1860). Whilst aboard the latter vessel he was advanced to Leading Seaman on 9 June 1863. In this rate he next served aboard EXCELLENT (September 1863) and on advancement to Gunner's Mate he joined MUTINE (April 1865), EXCELLENT (March 1869) and MINOTAUR (October 1870). He was pensioned ashore from the latter vessel on 11 May 1873 and awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal.
