Robert Goodyear entered the service as a Landsman aboard H.M.S. DRUID on 10 August 1825 and whilst in this ship he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on 29 January 1826 and to Able Seaman on 1 January 1828. In this rate he subsequently
served aboard UNDAUNTED (October 1829), and REVENGE (November 1830) becoming a member of the Gunner's Crew on 1 November 1836 and in this rate he next joined BRITANNIA (June 1837). He decided to join the Sailmaker's Crew aboard WELLESLEY (July 1837) and during a 5-year commission aboard this vessel he subsequently served as Captain of the Mast in January 1838, Bosun's Mate in August 1838, Captain's Coxswain in January 1849 and Bosun's Mate in July 1840. During service aboard WELLESLEY he gained entitlement to the China 1842 medal. He served next as a Quartermaster aboard THUNDERER (December 1842), ALBION (October 1843), INCONSTANT (March 1847), and QUEEN (June 1847). He joined HIBERNIA (December 1848) as Captain's Coxswain and subsequently served in this rate aboard CALEDONIA (April 1849), QUEEN (September 1849), VENGEANCE (January 1852) and QUEEN (January jl854). Whilst aboard the latter ship his rate changed on 9 August 1852 to Captain of the Afterguard and on 20 January 1853 to Bosun's Mate, he continued to serve aboard QUEEN until 2 August 1856 his service in this ship gained him entitlement to the Turkish and the British Crimean Medals with clasp ‘Sebastopol’. Pensioned ashore in August 1856 and awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal. Allowed to re-enter the service as an Able Seaman (Pensioner) aboard Royal Adelaide (October 1856) and served in this capacity for three and a half years until his final discharge to shore on 7 May 1860, having served in uniform for nearly 33 years.
