Joseph Cox was born in 1803 and joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. DOTEREL on 1 November 1819. Whilst in this ship he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on 3 February 1820 and to Captain's Steward on 1 May 1820. He next served aboard IPHIGENIA (August 1821) where he was rated Landsman, promoted to Ordinary Seaman on 1 January 1822. In this rate he joined OWEN GLENDOWER (November 1822) and subsequently served as an Able Seaman aboard SWALLOW (September 1824). Rejoined SWALLOW (April 1929) and served a six year commission as a Sailmaker until the ship was paid off in February 1835. Served next as an Able Seaman aboard PLOVER (August 1835), HOPE (July 1836) as a Sailmaker, and in the same rate aboard SKYLARK (October 1839). He was next afloat as an Able Seaman and later Quartermaster aboard CORNWALLIS (April 1841). During service in the latter vessel he took part in various actions during the 1842 war with China and thus became entitled to the China 1842 Medal. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal when CORNWALLIS returned to England and was paid off in November 1844. He was allowed to rejoin the service as an Able Seaman Pensioner aboard CALEDONIA (July 1845), AGINCOURT (January 1848), and ST GEORGE (August 1850). During a six year commission in this vessel he served as a Sailmaker and was present in the Baltic Campaign of 1854-55, thus gaining the Baltic Medal. He next joined IMPREGNABLE (April 1856) and served until 15 May 1856 when he was finally discharged to shore having served for over 30 years.
