Awarded 18 June 1846.
With the forename Joseph he first entered the service as a prime seaman aboard H.M.S. TARTAR on 7 November 1822, and was rated Able Seaman, aged 26 years, born Norfolk. He joined BEAGLE in March 1826 for her four year Commission as Captain of the Forecastle, but not before 1844 did he consistently hold Petty Officer status. His service record makes no reference to the award of this L.S. & G.C. medal when PHILOMEL was paid off. It was such oversights by the clerks excluding mention of ‘M & G’ which caused difficulties in the construction of the Anchor Type Medal Roll. He served for a further three years, intermittently after the award, before being invalided from the service in March 1852.
