Frank Puddick was born 1 August 1856 at Chichester, Hampshire, and enlisted as a Gunner in the Royal Marine Artillery on 13 July 1875. He was promoted to Bombadier in June 1880 whilst aboard H.M.S. PELICAN (1877-82) and at the time of the Egyptian crisis he was despatched to the Soudan as a member of the Mediterranean Marine Battalion on the 30 June 1882, and was present at the battle of Tel-El-Kebir. He returned to his Divisional Head Quarters on 31 October 1882 with his promotion to Corporal posted during the following month. During his next Commision afloat in H.M.S. IRIS (1883-87) he was detatched on 8 February 1884 to the Royal Marine Battalion formed from the men of the Mediterranean Fleet to serve in the Soudan and earned two additional clasps for Suakin 1884 and Tamaai. Whilst aboard IRIS he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal and promoted to Sergeant in October 1885. He received his ‘Colours’ in August 1892 while aboard H.M.S. INFLEXIBLE (1894-96) being pensioned to shore at the end of that Commission on 13 July 1896.
