On 30 April 1885, Natal took the first step towards forming Naval auxiliary forces in South Africa by forming the Natal Naval Volunteers of Durban. A small section under Commander Tatum served with the Royal Naval Brigade during the Siege of Ladysmith. In 1904 the title was changed to the Natal Naval Corps and as such formed part of the Natal Militia during the 1906 Rebellion, partly as field artillery and partly as infantry. He received the Colonial Auxiliary Forces L.S. & G.C. on 4 July 1905, one if eight awards to the corps.
