Thomas Garrett was born on 18 January 1869, and joined the Royal Navy Reserve on 15 October 1898. He received a Sub Lieutenant’s commission, Number 001175, with seniority of 8 October 1898, and was appointed Acting Lieutenant aboard H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE and DEFIANCE for Courses in Gunnery and Torpedo. He was awarded a 2nd Class Certificate for Gunnery on 1 July 1899 and appointed to NILE (July 1899) for 12 months training. He was next appointed to NAIAD (April 1902) for a second period of 12 month’s service with the Royal Navy and saw service during the operations in Somaliland 1902-04. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 24 November 1903, and on completion of his time aboard NAIAD elected to serve 2 further 12 month periods of training with the Royal Navy. He was promoted to Commander on retirement on 18 January 1914 having been awarded the Reserve Decoration in October 1913. In the early 1920’s he was appointed Chief Assistant Harbour Master, Tyne Improvement Commission. He died on 9 May 1947.
