John Hutton was born on 3 February 1866 at Devonport, Cornwall, and worked as a carpenter before joining the Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. INDUS as Carpenter's Crew on 8 December 1887 aged 21 years. He served aboard UNDAUNTED from April 1900 and was in Chinese waters during June to November 1900. He was pensioned ashore as Leading Shipwright on 2 May 1911 but does not appear to have been awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal. He was recalled on 2 August 1914 in the rate of Shipwright 1st Class aboard H.M.S. ARGONAUT and next served aboard KING ALFRED (September 1915) and VIVID II (September 1916) being demobilised to shore on 22 September 1916, having reached 50 years of age.
