Edward Frewen was born on 3 October 1877 in Northiam, Sussex, and entered the service as a Naval Cadet aboard the Training Ship BRITANNIA on 15 July 1891 when aged 13 years. On passing out of BRITANNIA he obtained two 1st Class, two 2nd Class and one 3rd Class Certificates and gained 10 months seniority. He was appointed to CLEOPATRA (September 1893) and whilst in this ship was promoted to Midshipman on 15 September 1893. He served in this rank aboard BLAKE (October 1893), MAGNIFICENT (December 1905), HERMIONE (January 1906), and ROYAL SOVEREIGN (September 1896). In the latter vessel he was promoted to Acting Sub Lieutenant on 15 March 1897 and confirmed in the rank on 15 April 1897. He subsequently joined WARSPITE (June 1897), REVENGE (April 1898) for BOXER, where he was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 December 1899. He served next aboard PIGMY in July 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion in China.

He returned to England in 1902 and was next appointed to VIVID (June 1902) for SPARTAN, MEDUSA (November 1902), MERCURY (May 1904), VIVID (June 1904) for HIGHFLYER, MARS (July 1904), HERCULES (September 1904, and ENCOUNTER (December 1904). He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 31 December 1907 and subsequently served aboard JUPITER (April 1908), PRINCE GEORGE (February 1909) and NEW ZEALAND (March 1909) first as Navigator and then as 1st Lieutenant. He was placed on the Retired List at own request on 25 October 1911.

During World War I he was recalled to serve as follows; COLUMBINE (August 1914), STEPHEN FURNESS (January 1915) a hired store and depot ship, INDUS (February 1915), VIVID (November 1915), MARGUERITA (December 1915) for Navigation Duties at BRINDISI, CORMORANT (March 1916) as Assistant to Flag Captain and for Navigation Duties, and promoted to Acting Commander on 1 December 1916. He joined PRESIDENT (July 1919) for Duty with the Naval Appointments Service and was demobilised on 22 November 1919, having been promoted to Commander on the Retired List on 3 October 1917. His war services were recognised by promotion to Captain on the Retired List on 3 October 1922. In 1919 the Admiralty recommended him to the Royal Court of Justice as a suitable Officer for appointment as Nautical Assessor to the Court of Appeal and in 1921 he was appointed a Nautical Assessor for a period of three years. He was awarded a Traver’s Pension of £75 per year in 1940 and died on 16 May 1941.
