Robert Brockway was born in the village of Sandport, Hampshire, on 5 October 1858, and was a labourer before he entered the service as a Domestic 3rd Class aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 10 November 1876. He was advanced to Domestic 2nd Class on 26 July 1877 but transferred to the Engineering Branch as a Stoker 2nd Class on 4 March 1880. He next served aboard TURQUOISE where he was advanced to Stoker 1st Class on 14 February 1881, ASIA (October 1881) and ASSISTANCE (October 1881). In the latter ship he was advanced to Leading Stoker on 10 October 1884 and served in the following ships: ASIA (April 1885), CORMORANT (May 1885), and ASIA (November 1890), IMPERIEUSE (February 1891) and was confirmed in the rank of Chief Stoker on 1 October 1891. He next served aboard VICTORY II (June 1894), EXCELLENT (October 1894), VICTORY (November 1894), AUSTRALIA (January 1895), VICTORY II (September 1896), PRINCE GEORGE (November 1896), VICTORY (July 1898), VICTORY III (August 1898), EDGAR (November 1898), ALACRITY (January 1899) for service in China, BARFLEUR (November 1901) and DUKE OF WELLINGTON (January 1902). He was pensioned ashore on 7 February 1902 with 25 years adult service having received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1891 after 21 years servitude. He joined the R.F.R. at Portsmouth on 8 February 1902 and served until discharged on 5 October 1908 on reaching 50 years of age. He was not recalled for service in World War I.
