Henry Tilley was born on 5 January 1870 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 11 December 1885 when aged 16 years. He served in South Africa and Somaliland whilst aboard REDBREAST and was pensioned ashore on 28 February 1910 having completed his 20 year adult service engagement. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1905 whilst serving aboard HMS EXCELLENT. He volunteered for war service in August 1914 and joined HMS HALCYON (2 August), CYCLOPS (September 1914), ZARIA an M.F.A.Vessel (January 1915), and VICTORY I on 11 April 1917 where he served until demobilised on 1 May 1919.
