Harry Rickard was born in Stoke Devonport, Devon, on 9 September 1867, and was a boilermaker before he joined H.M.S. INDUS as an Acting Engineroom Artificer 4th Class on 1 July 1889. He transferred to REDBREAST in February 1890 and advanced to E.R.A. 4th Class on 11 August 1890 and to E.R.A. 3rd Class on 1 July 1892. Served in this rate aboard VIVID II (May 1893) and MELITA (October 1895) and whilst in the latter ship he was awarded the Khedive's Sudan medal without clasp. He was advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class on 1 July 1896 and subsequently served in this rate aboard VIVID II (September 1896), HALCYON (January 1897), VIVID II (February 1898), BENBOW (November 1900) and PEARL (December 1900) where he was advanced to E.R.A. 1st Class on 1 July 1901, and served in South African waters to earn him the Queen's South Africa Medal without clasp. He served next aboard SIMOON (November 1904), VIVID II (January 1905), CAMBRIDGE (February 1905), BRITANNIA (April 1906), VIVID I (May 1906), BLAKE (July 1906), LEANDER (June 1907), SAPPHIRE (May 1908), LEANDER (June 1909) and VIVID II (November 1909). He was pensioned ashore on 4 July 1911 having served for 22 years. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in September 1904 whilst aboard PEARL. Although not a member of the Royal Fleet Reserve he volunteered for service in World War I and joined VIVID II as an E.R.A. 1st Class in August 1914 and next served aboard DEFIANCE (September 1914), VIVID II (July 1918), DEFIANCE (September 1918), and VIVID II (February 1919) being demobilised on 15 March 1919.
