John Dalton was born on 27 January 1870 in Kentish Town, Middlesex, and was an errand boy prior to joining the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BOSCAWEN on 18 May 1885. Advanced to Boy 1st Class on 10 March 1886 and joined AGINCOURT (July 1886) where he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman 27 January 1888. Served in this rank aboard ROYAL ADELAIDE (July 1888), DUKE OF WELLINGTON (September 1888), and VOLAGE (November 1888) where he was advanced to Able Seaman on 1 May 1889. Subsequently served in this rate aboard DUKE OF WELLINGTON (May 1889), EXCELLENT (October 1889), IMMORTALITE (July 1890) and BLENHEIM (May 1894) where he was advanced to Leading Seaman on 15 August 1894 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class 21 September 1894. He next served aboard VICTORY I (May 1895), and SCOUT (October 1895). Service in the latter vessel in Egyptian waters earned him the Khedive's Sudan medal without clasp. He was advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class on 22 June 1897 and served in this rate for the remainder of his Naval career aboard the following ship and shore establishments: VICTORY I (December 1898), EXCELLENT (February 1899), IPHIGENIA (September 1901), ABOUKIR (April 1902), EXCELLENT (June 1905), VICTORY I (September 1905), and RESEARCH (November 1905). During service in the latter ship he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1907. Served next aboard PRESIDENT (December 1907), FORTE (June 1908), NELSON (August 1908) and RENOWN (November 1909). He was pensioned ashore 21 January 1910 with 21 years adult service and although he did not join the R.F.R. he was recalled for War service aboard PYRAMUS (August 1914), ALERT (April 1916), DALHOUSIE (May 1916), VICTORY I (December 1916), VERNON (March 1917), VENERABLE (June 1918) and VICTORY I (February 1919). He was demobilised on 24 May 1919.
