A total of 41 clasps were issued for ‘Juba River 1893’, 20 as single clasps, the remainder with Witu August 1893. All recipients came from H.M.S. BLANCHE.

Albert Maddock was born in Stoke Damerel, Devonport on 5 April 1870, and joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 15 July 1885. He served his first and only three year Commission aboard BLANCHE (1890-94) as an Able Seaman (since 1 May 1890) earning his East & West Africa medal with two clasps. He was advanced to Leading Seaman on 1 January 1898, to Petty Officer 2nd Class in November 1898 and to Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1905. Since he had been disrated and lost Good Conduct Badges twice in his career, he was not eligible for the L.S. & G.C. medal. He was pensioned ashore on 10 April 1910, but recalled as Petty Officer 1st Class on 2 August 1914 and served on shore until demobilised on 31 October 1919.
