George Rose was born on 14 June 1876 in the village of Admisham near Dover, Kent, where he earned his living as a ropemaker. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd class aboard HMS ST VINCENT on 5 October 1891 when aged 15 years. He was landed for services in ALECTO's boats on the Brempe River and Shenboro District, Sierra Leone during 1898. As these boats came under heavy fire from the natives on numerous occasions he qualified for the award of the East & West Africa Medal with clasp ‘Sierra Leone 1898-99’. He was finally discharged to shore on 20 February 1918 ‘services no longer required’, and was not entitled to a long service medal on account of having twice deserted and various other offences.
