Samuel Good was born on 28 October 1872 in Nile End Old Town, London, and was a packing case maker prior to joining the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 17 October 1888, aged 16 years. He transferred to GANGES on 23 October 1888 and advanced to Boy 1st Class on 22 August 1889, rejoined IMPREGNABLE (September 1889) then served on HIBERNIA (October 1889) and EDINBURGH (November 1889). He elected to join the Signal Branch and was rated Signalman on 28 October 1890, and Qualified Signalman on 1 July 1891, serving in this rank aboard HIBERNIA (December 1892), VICTORY I (May 1894), ROYAL SOVEREIGN (May 1895), AUSTRALIA (November 1895), FOX (April 1896), and BARROSA (August 1896). Whilst in this ship he took part in the operations against Chief Overami of Benin in February 1897, and was advanced to 2nd Yeoman of Signals on 18 June 1897 and Yeoman of Signals on 1 August 1899. He served ashore between 1900-01 aboard DUKE OF WELLINGTON, VICTORY, DUKE OF WELLINGTON, and ST VINCENT, subsequently joining BRILLIANT (October 1901), MINOTAUR (January 1903), DUNCAN (October 1903), and VICTORY I (November 1905). Advanced to Acting Chief Yeoman of Signals (1 October 1905) and confirmed in this rate on 1 October 1906, he next joined TERPSICHORE (November 1906), HERMIONE (April 1907), JUPITER (January 1910) and VERNON (June 1910). He was pensioned ashore on 3 November 1912 having completed 22 years adult service, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1905 when serving aboard DUNCAN. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth on 4 November 1912, was mobilised as a Chief Yeoman of Signals at H.M.S. VERNON on 2 August 1914, but released to Shore (Dockyard) on 19 October 1914.
