Bernard Carey was born on 26 March 1874 in Hokilika, New Zealand, and prior to enlisting in the Royal Marines he served in the merchant service as a seaman. He joined the Royal Marine Depot at Walmer on 24 July 1893 and following recruit training was posted to 'Q' Company of the Royal Marine Artillery as a supernumery on 22 October 1893. He was advanced to Gunner 2nd Class on 21 April 1894 and to Gunner on 3 August 1894. He embarked aboard his first ship H.M.S. ST GEORGE in October 1894 and served in this vessel until April 1897, during which time he was landed for service on shore during July and August 1895 against the Rebellions Native Chief M'Burak. On 27 August 1896 he was present at the Bombardment of the Sultans Palace at Zanzibar and in February 1897 he was landed to take part in the Benin Expedition; for this later action he is also entitled to (and received in May 1898) the clasp ‘Benin 1897’. He disembarked to the RMA Depot from May to September 1897, and next embarked aboard INFLEXIBLE (September 1897) but was transferred to TRAFALGAR (October 1897). He served in this vessel until disembarked to the RMA Depot in October 1899 and served on shore for 15 months before next embarking aboard ROYAL ARTHUR (January 1901). He subsequently served aboard EURYALUS (March 1904) and WALLAROO (January 1905) and was discharged to shore on 26 July 1905 having completed his 12 year engagement. He did not qualify for a Long Service and Good Conduct medal
