John Diamond was born on 6 February 1858 in Gunnislake, Cornwall, and was a labourer before joining the service aboard H.M.S. INDUS as a Stoker 2nd Class on 1 May 1878. He served next aboard IRON DUKE (August 1878), was advanced to Stoker 1st Class on 1 January 1879 and joined INDUS (March 1883), WRANGLER (July 1884), BULLFROG (May 1888) and INDUS (June 1888). Having been advanced to Leading Stoker on 20 November 1888, he next served aboard ANSON (May 1889), and VIVID II (October 1892) being advanced to Acting Chief Stoker on 19 November 1892.

He joined PHOEBE (December 1892), was confirmed as a Chief Stoker on 1 January 1894 and landed as part of the Expedition against Chief Nanna of Broheme on the Benin River, August-September 1894. He next joined SAPPHO (January 1896), VIVID II (April 1896), JASON (September 1896), and VIVID II (October 1897) being pensioned ashore on 6 May 1898 after 20 years adult service. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1892 whilst aboard ANSON. Being 56 years old in 1914 he was not recalled for war service.
