Harry Charlick was born in Newton Ferrers, Devonshire, on 2 November 1868. He worked as a labourer before joining the Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE as a Boy 2nd Class on 17 June 1884 when aged 15 years. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class on 1 July 1885 and next joined AGINCOURT (December 1885) and FALCON (January 1886). He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on 2 November 1886 and to Able Seaman on 1 March 1888 and subsequently served aboard CAMBRIDGE (June 1888), REVENGE (June 1889), TRIUMPH (February 1890), CAMBRIDGE (June 1891), VIVID I (October 1891), and PHILOMEL (November 1891). Whilst in the latter ship took part in the expedition against Chief Nanna of Boheim in August and September 1894. He next joined PENELOPE (November 1894), where he was advanced to Leading Seaman on 24 November 1894, GRAFTON (December 1894), CAMBRIDGE (March 1895), VIVID I (May 1895), COLOSSUS (November 1895), and VIVID I (November 1897). In the latter ship he was advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class, and next joined MAGICIENNE (November 1897) where he was advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class on 29 May 1898. In MAGICIENNE he earned medals for South Africa and Jubaland. He served ashore (June 1901-March 1902) in the following establishments: VIVID I, EXCELLENT, VIVID I, CAMBRIDGE and VIVID, and subsequently joined LION (March 1902), DEFIANCE (August 1903), HERMIONE (July 1905), ESSEX (July 1905), CAMBRIDGE (March 1906) and VIVID I (July 1906).

He was pensioned ashore on 14 November 1906, having completed 20 years adult service. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport on 18 November 1906, and was mobilised on 2 August 1914 aboard VIVID I. He joined HUSSAR on 19 February 1915, EUROPA I on 15 June 1915, EUROPA I (LEONARDOS) on 1 January 1917, EUROPA II on 1 April 1917, VIVID II on 14 November 1917 and HECLA II on 26 February 1918, serving in this ship until demobilised on 1 April 1919, aged 50 years.
