Arthur Jolly/Jolley was born in the village of Sutton, near Chatham, on 21 April 1869, and worked as a chemist's assistant prior to joining the Royal Navy. He entered the service as an Assistant Sick Berth Attendant aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 28 April 1887, joined Haslar Hospital on 10 May 1887 and was advanced to Sick Berth Assistant on 9 November 1887. In this rank he joined Chatham Hospital (November 1887) and embarked aboard his first ship H.M.S. DUNCAN in July 1888. He returned to Chatham Hospital (September 1888) prior to joining COCKATRICE (October 1888) and subsequently served in the following H.M. Ships and Shore establishments: PEMBROKE (January 1892), Chatham Hospital (April 1892), PEMBROKE (July 1892), Chatham Hospital (September 1892), being advanced to Sick Berth Steward 2nd Class, PEMBROKE (July 1893), Chatham Hospital (September 1893), and SATELLITE (January 1894). Whilst in SATELLITE he served ashore in the Expedition sent to punish Chief Fodeh Silah in February and March 1894. He was advanced to Sick Berth Steward on 1 April 1897 and subsequently served at Chatham Hospital (October 1897), PEMBROKE I (February 1898), Chatham Hospital (March 1898), MERSEY (May 1898), SEVERN (May 1898), and ASTRA (June 1899). Disrated to S.B.A. on 2 August 1900 and served aboard ILLUSTRIOUS (August 1900) and PEMBROKE I (January 1903). Readvanced to 2nd S.B.S. on 30 January 1903 he next joined Chatham Hospital (September 1903), PEMBROKE (October 1903), SATELLITE (November 1903), PEMBROKE (October 1903), and SATELLITE (November 1903). Whilst in this ship he regained the rate of Sick Berth Steward on 10 April 1904. He next served aboard BERWICK (April 1904), PEMBROKE (October 1904), and Chatham Hospital (November 1904). He was invalided to shore with pension on 7 December 1905 and although he served for 18 years, the misdemeanour for which he was disrated in August 1900 deprived him of his chance of receiving the L.S. & G.C. medal.
