Henry Cope was born in Manora, Karachi, on 5 March 1864, and served as an Apprentice in the British India & Peninsular & Orient Company's Dockyards and also in the Government Dockyard at Bombay. He was deputed to Suakin, Egypt, in 1885 for fitting up fresh water condensers, and on return from Suakin rejoined the Government Dockyard. He entered the Indian Marine as a Temporary Assistant Engineer aboard IRRAWADDY on 1 March 1887, and served aboard IRRAWADDY which was used to transport troops and stores during the military operations in Upper Burma during 1887. In the rank of Assistant Engineer he subsquently served aboard CLIVE (February 1888), DALHOUSIE (July 1890), CANNING (September 1890), SLADEN (December 1890), WARREN HASTINGS (September 1893), and ELPHINSTONE (April 1894). Promoted to Engineer on 1 June 1895, he was next appointed to DALHOUSIE (June 1895), LAWRENCE (November 1897), INVESTIGATOR (June 1899) and CANNING (September 1899). Whilst on leave in England he died suddenly on 16 July 1900 at the young age of 36 years.
