William Sargent was born on 11 February 1863 in Shevlock, Cornwall. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 14 July 1878, and served until May 1880, having been advanced to Boy 1 Class during August 1879. He served next aboard IRIS (15 May 1880 to 30 October 1882), where he was advanced to Ord in February 1881, and to A.B. two months after leaving her. In the latter vessel he earned his dated Egypt medal without clasp. He subsequently served aboard RACER (9 April 1885 to 10 May 1889) earning the clasp ‘Gemaizah 1888’. He was advanced to Leading Seaman whilst aboard ROYAL ADELAIDE during October 1889, and then served aboard HIMALAYA (1891-93). He was disrated to Able Seaman for incompetence whilst serving aboard ORLANDO during December 1895, VIVID I (1897-1901) where he was made an A.B. (Pensioner) on 5 March 1901 to serve in TEMERAIRE (1901-03), and finally pensioned to shore on 30 April 1904. On two occasions he lost a Good Conduct Badge, hence no L.S. & G.C. award. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 23 March 1901, and served ashore during World War I from 2 August 1914 until demobilised on 23 January 1919.
