William Drysdale was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, on 30 May 1862. He attested at Walmer on 30 June 1881 and served aboard H.M.S. GARNET (1882-83). He next served with the R.M. Battalion in Egypt from February 1884 until May 1885, earning the Egypt campaign medal with two clasps. Service life was not to his liking and he purchased his discharge from the Chatham Division for twenty pounds on 8 September 1885.
