Edward Wilson was born in Plumstead, Kent, on 1 July 1860. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 1 October 1875, and subsequently served aboard ST VINCENT (1875-77), BELLEROPHON (1877-79), BLANCHE (1879-81), MINOTAUR (April 1882 to December 1882) where he qualified for the dated Egypt medal without clasp and was advanced to A.B. in July 1882. He joined CONDOR (1884-87) where he was landed with the ship's Naval Brigade and earned the clasps ‘Suakin 1885’ and ‘Tofrek’. He was advanced to Leading Seaman in January 1885. His last vessel was EXCELLENT (1887-88) where he was disrated to Able Seaman in March 1888, and discharged to shore on completion of his first 10 years of his continuous service engagement on 6 July 1888. He was not entitled to a Long Service & Good Conduct award.
