George Collis was born in Camberwell, Surrey, on 20 August 1862. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BOSCAWEN on 26 October 1877, until July 1879, having been advanced to Boy 1st Class in November 1878. He subsequently served aboard BACCHANTE (1879-82) where he was advanced to Ord during August 1880 and to A.B. in February 1882, WOODLARK (24 February 1884 to 25 March 1887) where he was made Leading Seaman in June 1884, Petty Officer 2nd Class in October 1884 and Petty Officer 1st Class (Quarter Master) in November 1886. He then served in RODNEY (1890-94) where he received his L.S. & G.C. medal on 25 February 1891, and RUPERT (1896-97). Pensioned to shore on 30 September 1900, he was recalled on 2 August 1914 for World War I to serve as a Petty Officer 1st Class aboard M.F.A. PEREGRINE until August 1915. He was invalided ashore on 26 January 1916.
