James Earl was born in Cuxron, Kent, on 20 April 1862. He entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 9 October 1882 and was drafted to TYNE (1883-84) where he was advanced to Stoker in January 1884. He earned his Egypt campaign medal aboard TURQUOISE (20 May 1884 to 8 May 1885) but was invalided ashore from ASIA and Haslar Hospital on 7 August 1885.
