Charles Ivens was born in Birmingham on 23 February 1860, and joined Number 28 Company at Walmer on 23 March 1878. He served aboard H.M.S. COQUETTE (20 January 1883 to 23 February 1885) gaining entitlement to the Egypt medal without clasp. He next joined RIFLEMAN (1885-89) but was invalided from the service on 18 December 1889. Not the best of Marines, he had deserted during 1879 and also in 1882, hence no L.S. & G.C. medal.
