John Martin was born in Woolwich, Kent, on 10 October 1862. He entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 9 February 1883 until April 1884, and was advanced to Stoker during November 1883. He subsequently served aboard DOLPHIN (1 May 1884 to 30 September 1887), and whilst in this ship earned his Egypt award. He next served in PEMBROKE (1887-90), GOLDFINCH (1890-93), and ROYALIST (1893-94) where he was advanced to Leading Stoker 1st Class in July 1893, followed by SANS PAREIL (1895-98) and CAESAR (1900-01). He was pensioned ashore on 27 May 1904 from PEMBROKE II. During his career he had been deprived of a Good Conduct Badge on three separate occasions, hence no L.S. & G.C. award.
