James Dolan was born in Killallon, Bactobel, Cavan, on 19 July 1864. After earning his living as a labourer, he joined the Royal Marines and was posted to Walmer and Number 43 Company on 19 July 1882. He was drafted to join the R.M. Battalion, Egypt, for the period 10 February 1884 until 7 July 1885, earning the Egypt medal and ‘Suakin 1885’ clasp. He next served aboard IMPREGNABLE (1885-86) and TERROR (1886-89) and was transferred to Portsmouth Division on 9 October 1889. His latter service has not been located.
