Alfred Eddy was born in St Just, Cornwall, on 18 December 1860. He entered the service as an Acting Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 7 June 1882 and subsequently served aboard ORION (1882-83). Service in this ship gained him the dated Egypt medal without clasp. He next joined ALEXANDRA (1883-84) where he was advanced to E.R.A during July 1883, MONARCH (1884-85) borne for the Nile Flotilla, where he earned his Nile clasp. He then served aboard FEARLESS (1888-91) and BRITANNIA (1891-94) where he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 21 June 1892. Whilst on the books of VICTORY he was advanced to Chief E.R.A. during November 1894, and then served aboard CRESCENT (1894-97), AUSTRALIA (1897-99) and finally GIBRALTAR (1901-02) from which he was pensioned to shore on 29 July 1902.
