Thomas Hines was born in East Greenwich on 1 September 1853, and joined the Royal Navy a good deal older than most recruits at the age of 22 years, as an Acting Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 3 August 1876. He was advanced to E.R.A. during August 1879 aboard DANAE (1877-81) on 3 August 1879, and subsequently served aboard HECLA (7 September 1882 to 6 May 1885) earning this Soudan campaign reward. He served next aboard VERNON (1886-88) where he received his L.S. & G.C. medal on 11 January 1887. He next joined SCOUT (1888-91) where he was made a Chief E.R.A. to date from 28 May 1890, and lastly aboard HIBERNIA (1891-94). He was pensioned to shore on 17 August 1896, having served for 20 years.
