James O'Hara was born in Shankhill, Antrim, on 30 November 1856. He joined the service in January 1873 as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. GANGES by the new system allowing a ten year engagement. He advanced to Boy 1st Class in December 1873, and continued to serve aboard VICTOR EMMANUEL (1874-76) where he was advanced to Ord during April 1875, FROLIC (1876-78) where he was made an A.B. in April 1877, BELLEISLE (1879-81), LONDON (1882-84) and finally HECLA (21 January 1884 to 10 May 1884). He was discharged to shore on 30 November 1884 when his ten year engagement expired and was not entitled to a Long Service & Good Conduct award.
