Charles Sollitt was born in Curragh, County Kildare, on 14 April 1857, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 28 September 1873. He was advanced to Ord in March 1876 and to Able Seaman in October 1877, whilst aboard BLACK PRINCE (1875-78). He earned his Egypt campaign awards whilst aboard CARYSFORT from September 1880 until 14 April 1884. He subsequently served aboard RIFLEMAN (1885-89) where he was advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class (2nd Captain of Forecastle) in March 1887, and Petty Officer 1st Class in April 1888. He was discharged dead, having fallen into a dry dock whilst serving aboard CURACOA on 14 December 1891. On four separate occasions he lost Good Conduct Badges, hence no L.S. & G.C. medal awarded.
