William Short was born on 18 November 1854 in Moreton Hampstead, Devon, and enlisted at Walmer into No 15 Company on 18 June 1873. Served aboard TRIUMPH (November 1874 to April 1877), INDUS (November 1877 to September 1878) where he received promotion to Corporal 24 September 1878 (47 Company), and later ashore to Sergeant on 7 February 1880 (48 Company). He continued his service at sea aboard BELLEISLE (November 1881 to January 1882), HECLA (7 March 1882 to 25 May 1882), PENELOPE (15 June 1882 to 9 July 1882), and INVINCIBLE (10 July 1882 to 16 February 1883). In the latter ship he took part in the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882. He joined CARYSFORT (17 February 1883 to 10 March 1884) and served on shore with the Royal Marine Battalion and earned an additional two campaign clasps. Served next aboard CARYSFORT (17 February 1883 to 10 March 1884), and EURYALUS for Royal Marine Battalion (26 March 1884 to 27 April 1884), and received further promotion to Colour Sergeant on 20 August 1887. He saw further service aboard CARYSFORT (January 1888 to March 1891) where he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 20 February 1888. He was discharged on completion of his 21 years service on 20 June 1894.
