George Phillipence was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, on 14 June 1847, and after being a labourer in civilian life he enlisted as a Private Royal Marines in Number 6 Company, Portsmouth, on 14 June 1867. He served aboard the following ships: WARRIOR (May 1867 to September 1871), DUKE OF WELLINGTON (October 1873 to September 1874), ASIA (September 1875 to September 1877), VICTORY (August 1879 to September 1881), and MONARCH (12 January 1882 to 11 February 1884). In the latter ship he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882. He next served aboard EURYALUS, R.M. He subsequently returned to MONARCH until she was paid off on 25 April 1885, joined THUNDERER (April 1885 to September 1885), and finally served aboard INVINCIBLE (November 1886 to October 1888). He was discharged to shore with a pension on 27 March 1889 and, having been sent to cells five times during his career, did not qualify for a Long Service & Good Conduct award.
