Edward Thompson was born in Shorne, Kent, on 6 April 1853. He entered the service in the rate of Cook's Mate aboard PEMBROKE on 1 January 1873, but soon decided to change his branch, joining H.M.S. PEMBROKE as a Stoker 2nd Class in June 1873. He subsequently served aboard RALEIGH (1874-77) where he was advanced to the rate of Stoker in July 1877, and ALEXANDRA (March 1880 to April 1883). In the latter vessel he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria and was later landed on shore for service with the Naval Brigade and took part in the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir. He served next aboard CARYSFORT which he joined as a Leading Stoker until April 1884, further service ashore resulting in the award of the ‘Suakin 1884’ clasp. He was advanced to Acting Chief Stoker (Chief Petty Officer) on 22 May 1885 whilst aboard H.M.S. ASIA, and then served aboard ORONTES (1887-89) and CAMPERDOWN (1890-91) from which vessel he was pensioned to shore on 2 December 1891. On four separate occasions he lost a Good Conduct Badge, hence no award of the L.S. & G.C. medal.
