George Gorfett was born on 2 January 1860 and joined the Royal Navy as an Assistant Engineer, to work in Portsmouth Dockyard on 1st July 1880. His first vessel was H.M.S. SERAPIS (July 1881 to June 1882), followed by HUMBER (11 June 1882 to 3 November 1886) where he earned his awards for the Egypt and Souda, and was promoted to Engineer on 1 September 1885. He subsequently served aboard ASIA (1886-88), PORPOISE (1888-90), HEARTY (1891-94) where he received promotion to Chief Engineer on 16 July 1893, and finally PEMBROKE (1894-96). He retired as ‘unfit’ on 6 March 1896, but received further promotion, to Staff Engineer (Retired) on 16 July 1897 and to Fleet Engineer (Retired) on 16 July 1901. He died on 28 June 1951 aged ninety one years.
