George Lawrence was born in December 1856 in the village of Burley, near Ringwood, Hampshire, and was enlisted into the Corps in Salisbury on 12 December 1874 aged 18 years. He was appointed an Infantry Supernumerary whilst undergoing Recruit Training and posted to the 14th Company of the Royal Marine Artillery on 15 April 1875. He embarked aboard his first ship H.M.S. BLACK PRINCE (May 1877) and then served aboard SULTAN (May 1878) prior to disembarking to the R.M.A. Depot (June 1878) where he was promoted to Bombardier on 28 March 1879. He next embarked aboard CARYSFORT (September 1880), and whilst in this vessel he was promoted to Corporal on 16 March 1881 and qualified for the undated Egypt medal and Khedive's Star. He was transferred to EURYALUS (February 1884) for service on shore with the Royal Marine Battalion where he was present at the Battles of El-Teb and Tamaai in February and March 1884. He next embarked aboard HUMBER (April 1884) for passage to England and was there disembarked to the R.M.A. Depot in May 1884. He served on shore for 12 months prior to joining HOTSPUR (April 1885) and on that ship paying off he returned to the RMA Depot in August 1885 and received promotion to Sergeant on 24 February 1885. He re-embarked in HOTSPUR in February 1886, and was transferred to NEPTUNE in May 1887. He disembarked to the R.M.A. Depot in September 1887 where he decided to forego his Sergeant's status and 12 years of service life by purchasing his discharge from the Corps on 8 September 1887. Accordingly he did not qualify for his L.S. & G.C. medal.
